Varicose Eczema

Eczema is is a chronic inflammation of the outer layers of the skin. It is a form of dermatitis, which may progress to a blistering, weeping, or scaling of the skin or the leg. It is most often located near a varicose vein (not always visible to the naked eye) and seen in the ankle region but may be located anywhere on the leg. It is not contagious.

Symptoms of eczema may include itching, which is the most common symptom, dry skin and a rash usually consisting of red or scaly areas of skin. The cracks and poor skin condition of this disorder can allow the entry of bacteria which can lead to a bacterial infection causing a spreading cellulitis infection in the leg. If the skin condition deteriorates further and breaks down, a venous ulcer may form.

Dr. Sellers recommends early treatment of varicose veins and varicose eczema. Immediate medical attention is recommended if redness and swelling occur, a yellowish crusting is present or drainage of pus is observed.

In addition to physical discomfort, people with eczema may develop emotional problems, such as depression and anxiety. They may experience social difficulties due to visible skin rashes.
